Memorable memes used in esports

Whether it is a cheating attempt, a crazy one liner or an over exaggerated expression, the internet is all over it. Throughout the years esports has been a home to some of the most weird and ridiculous memes. Some of these memes might have a different meaning in some context, but as gamers, it is most likely that we’ve encounter them in our everyday matchmaking.

Here are some of them.

PogChamp

Ah, the Pogchamp meme, the perfect storm of pure excitement and utter confusion. For those who are not familiar, it is a still image of commentator and streamer Ryan “Gootecks” Gutierrez showing an exaggerated expression of joy and excitement. It has been used by gamers, streamers, and internet users alike as a reaction image to express a range of emotions from joy, to surprise, to disbelief. While the meme has certainly been around for a while, it has only recently become a global phenomenon thanks to its use in the popular game Among Us. It has become so popular in fact, that it was even added as an emote in the game. Now Pogchamp can be seen everywhere, from the streaming community to social media, and even in everyday conversations. Whether you love it or hate it, you can’t deny that Pogchamp is a meme that’s here to stay.

Is That Balanced?

Esports has come a long way since its humble beginnings and there is no doubt that it is here to stay. One of the most interesting things about esports is the diverse range of skillsets required for success. From the strategizing of a captain to the mechanical prowess of a midlaner, there is something for everyone. One of the most iconic examples of unbalanced skills in esports comes from the match between Navi and TongFu at The International 2013. In this match, Puppey pulled off an incredible play by correctly predicting Dendi’s movements and hooking Tongfu players with a fountain hook. This ultimately led to Navi’s victory and set the stage for banning this ridiculous play.

This legendary match showed the world just how important unbalanced skills can be in esports. When Dota 2 released a mini documentary video about the fountain hook, Alliance’s Loda is clearly seen to be annoyed Navi got away with this play, hence the meme, “Is that balance”?

This meme represents how OP (overpowered) skills can create the most ridiculous plays even in the biggest stage.

FPS Doug: BOOM HEADSHOT!

When it comes to the most memorable esports memes, FPS Doug is always at the top of the list.

This lovable character originated on a Twitch stream where he would pop up in the chat to give his hilarious take on the action. But his fame soon spread beyond Twitch, with people using his quips and one-liners in all online conversations.

Many moons ago, a comedy troupe called Pure Pwnage debuted a character named FPS Doug. (FPS, for any noobs reading, here refers to “first-person shooter” video games.) Doug was a Counter-Strike addict. He didn’t have a job; he thought carrying a knife made you run faster; and screamed “BOOM HEADSHOT” every time he made a kill.

FPS Doug is probably the most viral meme in video game history. The term “BOOM HEADSHOT” still gets used on the regular, and the character’s screamy, hyperactive, Mountain Dew-swilling persona has been replicated in dozens of montages both parodic and genuine.

FPS Doug is the perfect example of a meme that was able to transcend esports and become a mainstream sensation. He’s made appearances on TV shows, movies,, and even advertising campaigns. And his popularity is only going to continue to grow.

Jebaited

The Jebaited meme is a real treat for anyone who loves to be surprised and entertained. It pokes fun at the classic video game trope of being “baited” or tricked by the enemy. The meme usually features a screenshot of a character in a video game, usually looking shocked or scared, with the phrase “Jebaited” written underneath. It’s a great way to lightheartedly poke fun at yourself or others who have been fooled. It’s also a great way to keep up with the latest trends in gaming and pop culture. The meme has been around since the early days of gaming, but it has recently seen a resurgence in popularity due to its wide-spread use on social media. Whether you’re a fan of gaming or just looking for a good laugh, the Jebaited meme is sure to get you a few laughs. So don’t be “baited” – get in on the fun and enjoy the Jebaited meme!

Word.exe

During a match with team Revolution on the group stage of eXTREMELAND ZOWIE Asia CSGO 2018, an admin found a file on forsaken’s SSD. Forsaken, a player from Optic India got caught using a cheat engine called “Word.exe“.

The admin then quickly approached forsaken to check the file; forsaken then insisted on deleting the file, the admin stopped him. The viewers would then realize that the word file is indeed a cheat, an aimbot, and a wallhack cheat. Forsaken couldn’t do anything while his teammates looked at him in disgust. Optic India was disqualified from the tournament and released their whole roster; OpTic Gaming then closed OpTic India. Forsaken was banned for any Valve events for five years.

Word.exe would become a major meme not only in CS: GO but in whole esports community.

Kappa

The Kappa meme is a popular meme in the esports community. It is often said in Twitch chat when someone does something stupid or fails.

It originates from a Japanese streamer who was using the word “kappa” as an onomatopoeia for spilling water. In Twitch chat, it’s often used as a way to say “I’m just kidding” or “no offense”.

Kappa is one of the oldest memes in the gaming world. It was first used on the streaming platform Twitch in June of 2011, and since then it has become a mainstay of the gaming community. The meme is a greyscale image of a goblin-like avatar with a mischievous expression, and it is usually accompanied by the text “Kappa”. The meme is widely used to express sarcasm or trolling, or to show that the user is joking or being sarcastic. It is also used to express enthusiasm and joy, or even to show support for fellow gamers. The meme is so popular that it has even been made into t-shirts, mugs, and other merchandise. So if you want to show your support for the gaming community or just express your love of gaming, then you can’t go wrong with the Kappa esports meme.
